Holden Color

Holden Color lithographers started as a family operation in 1983. What originally began as a commercial film-stripping operation soon evolved into a full-fledged lithography business. Holden wanted to set itself apart from other offset printers, and needed a memorable way to do that.

While all of the attributes of quality and service were strong benefits, what was lacking was how it translated into a unique image and message. We needed to transform Holden into a brand that stood for those attributes...that went beyond the simple and overused words "quality" and "service." We wanted to create a statement that made people feel the quality and service, without ever having to state them. We wanted to create a brand that separated Holden from other "printers." So we took a different approach.

We started by re-designing their logo into a clean, simple and elegant icon. Then we moved on to create their new stationery, website, newsletter, direct mail and collateral materials. And finally, we introduced a new trade ad campaign into the market.

The premise of the campaign was quite simple...

The mere physical craft of printing is about putting an image on paper, but there may be more to it than that. What goes into printing beyond ink, paper, plates and binding? What separates Holden Color from any other printer? Maybe there is more than just the two dimensions to printing on paper. Maybe there is another dimension that embodies less tangible qualities. Like the depth of "how" and "why" these people practice their craft. Maybe that's what Holden Color stands for. Maybe...
